Story overview
The Challenge
Structural Deflection and Alignment Risks in Asymmetric Bending
For specialized heavy fabricators producing thick-walled pressure vessels, reactors, and heat exchangers for the petrochemical sector, maintaining tight geometric tolerances is a constant operational challenge. When rolling heavy plates into thick cylindrical shells, the immense forces required naturally cause the machine frame and the rolls to deflect under load.
If this structural deflection is not precisely managed, it introduces geometric errors, leaving extended flat sections at the plate ends and a barrel effect on the cylinder body. During the subsequent calibration and re-rolling phases, these deviations prevent the longitudinal and circumferential joints from aligning perfectly. For fabricators managing demanding energy sector contracts, any misalignment translates into extensive manual rework, prolonged welding prep times, and severe production bottlenecks that threaten rigid delivery schedules and risk-mitigation targets.
The Solution
Davi MAV Symmetric Variable-Axis Technology
To eliminate these process variables and secure predictable manufacturing continuity, petrochemical fabrication specialist Beta integrated a high-capacity Davi MAV (Three-Roll Variable Axis Plate Roll) into its production fleet.
The Davi MAV series counters structural distortion through a synchronized mechanical and hydraulic architecture:
Variable Interaxis Geometry: Operating conceptually like an industrial press-brake, the MAV allows for individual horizontal movement of both side rolls and precise vertical travel of the top roll. This enables operators to dynamically adjust the width between the bottom rolls based on plate thickness, maximizing the leverage arm and pressing efficiency during calibration.
Full Hydraulic and Geometrical Symmetry: On systems engineered for heavy-duty pressing capacities, Davi implements a symmetric "pull-pull" configuration. The hydraulic cylinders pull the top roll down from below, compressing the ultra-sturdy compact frame instead of stretching it, which minimizes structural distortion and ensures a uniform load distribution along the entire width of the plate.
Patented Servo-Tronic Parallelism Control: Oil flow and pressure to each roll cylinder are synchronized through dedicated pumping circuits supported by high-speed electro-valves. This independent, dual parallelism control ensures that the rolls remain perfectly parallel at all times—even in the event of an electronic failure—mitigating operational risk and preventing unplanned shop downtime.
The Results
Eradicated Downstream Rework
Perfect rolls parallelism and minimized frame distortion ensure that thick-walled shells are formed with precise dimensional tolerances, delivering a flawless fit-up during circumferential welding and completely eliminating manual post-rolling corrections.
Shortest Flat Ends
Motorized top and side rolls provide optimal torque transmission and plate grip, allowing operators to pinch the heavy sheet exactly at the tangent point to achieve the shortest possible flat end, saving expensive material and reducing pre-bending cycle times.
Empowered Operator Safety
The MAV’s progressive bumping mode provides precise, step-by-step geometric forming under full CNC control, keeping operators at a safe distance from heavy moving components during complex operations.
The Technical Credibility Milestone: Over 50 Years of Engineering Stability and Reliable Support
Davi’s heavy-rolling technology is backed by more than 50 years of continuous R&D and dedicated vertical industry expertise. Every MAV system is designed and manufactured under strict quality standards (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001) in Cesena, Italy, utilizing high-grade, commercially sourceable components to guarantee maximum asset longevity and simple maintenance.
To secure long-term manufacturing continuity for our global partners, Davi provides a dedicated customer service structure offering 24/5 remote assistance via secure network access and rapid spare parts shipping from a stock inventory exceeding 11,000 line items.
